First, my heart is so broken for these families that have lost their children, mothers, sisters, and friends. What a sad day when life has so little meaning to people, what a sad day too, when our news reporters show zero emotion while reporting on something like this.
So, I started to wonder, why? Why do we all seem like this is a shock, but not a devastation? Here are my simple thoughts that no one probably even wants to hear. I believe with all of my heart, that while we begin to argue about gun laws and the right to keep and bear arms, we are totally bypassing an issue we should be more concerned about than anything....the filth our children are being completely desensitized to. I wonder, if in the next few days anything will be said about what types of games this boy played or movies he watched?? Or if we will just continue, as a country and as parents to completely ignore this very SERIOUS issue......I am thinking, as I read these articles about banning guns, "Seriously???? Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Halo, zombies...." When will we start to examine the fact that there are seriously mentally disturbed people out there, who think up these games, and we are pouring their perverted idea of "fun" into the youth across this country. Have you ever met a veteran, who has actually fought and killed?? He doesn't think it is a fun and exciting thing, but wakes with nightmares and struggles with that guilt for the rest of his life. However, our young people are being encouraged to take lives for "points" in a game!! I am so disturbed that these games are still on the shelves, when we know for a fact that most of these young men who have committed these horrific crimes spent hours playing these types of games! Horror movies seem to be the only kinds being released anymore...Americans don't see people as people, with families, souls, feelings...they see them as opponents, just another body with no value....no wonder!! How about this for a change, instead of talking about banning weapons, let's talk about banning the filth our youth are being bombarded with, and we as parents are just brushing it off and saying, "oh, they're just being kids" or, "oh, they're just being boys" No, what they're learning to be is sadistic, evil, hateful, malicious....under the roof of their own homes....I'm am disgusted that we are not ripping these things off of the shelves and breaking/burning them. What we put into our youth, is what will come out. That is proven by just one look at history. I have begun to think even with my Bekah, does she have any movies that we need to throw out? I hope we will all wake up to this issue.
Okay, now, onto my Mom's famous Sugar Cookie recipe, I LOVE these cookies!! They are not too sweet, which is why I love them, they are kind of shortbready in texture, and perfect for a sweet frosting!!
Mama Dawn's Sugar Cookies
Ingredients:
7-8 (4c) cups of flour
1lb (1/2lb) butter
2 cups (1c) sugar
1/2 teaspoon (1/4 tsp) baking soda
1 teaspoon (1/2 tsp) baking powder
1/2 teaspoon (1/4 tsp) salt
4 eggs (2)
3 Tablespoons (1 1/2 Tbs) water
2 Tablespoons (1 Tbs) vanilla
Cream Cheese Frosting:
8 oz cream cheese(completely softened)
3/4 c butter
1 Tbs vanilla
6 c powdered sugar
Blend together butter, sugar, eggs, water, vanilla, and salt, just until creamed. Blend in soda and powder, and then add flour gradually. Shape dough into a ball, and refridgererate at least 2 hours. When dough is good and chilled, preheat oven to 350. Roll dough out fairly thin, but not too thin, the key is for every cookie on the cookie sheet to be about the same thickness, so they bake evenly. Cut out your desired shapes and roll scraps back into a ball and put back in the fridge (These cookies will rise up, not out) Place on cookie sheet and bake for about 10 minutes, give or take, according to your oven. Mine is always 10 on the dot. These cookies will not brown, unless they are burnt, they will just fluff up, and if you lightly touch the middle of one, it should pop back up. Let cool for about 5 minutes, and then move to a cooling rack, so they don't get soggy. Once all of your cookies have been baked, begin preparing your icing. I would blend the butter, vanilla, and cream cheese first, and then slowly blend in the sugar, so the vanilla doesn't lump up. Choose your icing colors, and seperate into bowls and dye the icing. Ice your cookies and let them sit on cooling racks again, until the icing is dried over and you can touch it without leaving a mark. At this point you can tear off a long piece of wax paper and layer it between each layer of cookies in a tupperware, or storage container of your choice. Happy baking :)
